If you’re looking to take a relationship to the next level, an indulgent pampering session and perhaps some new lingerie is probably on the cards.
But all that preparation could end up falling flat if you make a crucial mistake with your perfume.
As well as boosting your confidence for seduction, the right kind of set can amp up passions, while others will place you firmly in the friend zone.
Fragrance expert Karen Gilbert has recently worked with Lenor to develop a new revolutionary way to wear scent, through Parfum des Secrets, a fine fragrance for clothes.
Here she tells Femail how to use perfume to feel more seductive and ensure your fragrance isn’t one big turn off.

CHOOSE SEDUCTIVE NOTES
Jasmine and Ylang Ylang are usually associated with seduction and romance and appeal to everyone, so look out for fragrances labelled with exotic florals.
If you want to be more subtle then soft musk notes with a touch of creamy sandalwood will make you feel like you’re enveloped in a soft cashmere blanket.
For an air of mystery, choose notes of oriental amber and incense with a touch of spice.

AVOID ‘FRIEND ZONE’ SCENTS
Heady florals and exotic ambers all have an underlying ‘animalic’ note that triggers a primal response in us.
Whilst we want to smell clean and fresh, perfume notes such as zingy citrus colognes, green florals and aquatic marine fragrances that say ‘just stepped out of the shower’ are not the best choice for romance and seduction.
You’re better off saving those for the gym or the office.
The same goes for anything too sweet and confectionary that smells of lollipops or chocolate – a touch of vanilla is fine but steer clear of the candyfloss as many can find it heady and overpowering.

LAYER YOUR FRAGRANCE
Fragrance will only last a certain amount of time on skin and rather than constantly applying more, layer your main perfume with other products.
Layering with a body cream will help the fragrance to last on skin and spraying your scent into the air and walking through it will give you a mist on your hair and clothes too.
Think of fragrance layering like you do with your makeup and consider products such as fabric enhancer as the foundation.
DON’T FORGET YOUR LINGERIE AND SHEETS
When you’re talking romance and seduction make sure your scent choice extends to your lingerie and bedsheets.
You can spritz with your regular perfume but there is a risk of some perfumes, especially the oriental ambers, staining the fabric.
Choose a scent especially designed for fabric such as Lenor Parfum des Secrets that blends in with your signature scent.
CHOOSE A FRAGRANCE YOU LOVE
One of the main reasons we wear scent is to feel good. I can’t emphasise this enough, if you feel happy and confident you will be more alluring to others.
In my experience, most people who wear scent do so for themselves as a part of a daily ritual of getting ready to face the world.
Scent is a means of communication without words – so choose the best scent to tell the story you wish to portray.
Ignore fashion trends if you don’t feel they suit you and pick a fragrance that works with your own body scent, paying close attention to how the smell evolves on your skin through the day.
When deciding on a new scent, try it out and make sure you live with it for a while.
Big heady florals are definitely seductive for some but can be overbearing by the end of the day for others.
