Public School announced Monday that it would be the latest brand to deviatefrom the standard Fall/Winter and Spring/Summer show schedule starting in June 2016. Like fellow buzzy label Vetements, the collections will be shown in December and June, adhering more closely with the menswear and pre-collections calendar (as well as with the retail delivery calendar) than the traditional ready-to-wear format.
The American brand will also follow in the footsteps of European luxury heavy-hitters Burberry and Gucci by combining their menswear and womenswear collections into one cohesive show, dubbed “Collection 1” (pre-spring and spring) and “Collection 2” (pre-fall and fall).
“Showing twice a year with both men’s and women’s in one show will allow us to really develop our ideas cohesively throughout the year and subsequently slow the entire process down,” designer Dao-Yi Chow says in a release. “We can actually enjoy our collections as opposed to being tied to the calendar.”
“When we launched women’s it was always the extension of the men’s collections. It was a collection that our female friends could enjoy without altering the men’s pieces to wear,” designer Maxwell Osborne adds. “We feel the similar design approach made more of an impact when we showed men’s and women’s at the same time.”
The release notes that Public School “will focus on consumer-facing activity during fashion weeks in September and February;” what that means in terms of runway presentations is not immediately clear, though other labels have experimented with one-off events and Insta-shows recently.
There is no word on how this might affect DKNY, a brand at which the designers took the helm in 2015.
