Nisan Ong of Thailand-based Ong Jewelry Design is aiming to make a difference in the field of fine jewellery design with his non-conformist ideas and avant-garde take on jewellery manufacturing.
An ardent art collector, Ong describes his jewellery collections as unconventional and one of a kind, with a strong allusion to nature and tradition. In a talk withJNA, Ong shares his creative process and his dream to revolutionise the world of jewellery design.
Nisan Ong: What I like about designing and making jewellery is being able to combine coloured gemstones with a variety of precious metals. All my collections are very colourful. I’m partial to spinel, blue and fancy sapphires, and diamonds. I recently completed a number of new collections – Colour of Happiness and the animal-inspired Legend line. The latter also takes inspiration from the Chinese philosophy of the ‘yin’ and ‘yang.’ One of the highlights of the Legend Collection is a deer necklace set with garnets, tsavorites and diamonds in silver and gold.
JNA: Thailand has a very rich culture. Does that influence your designs as well?
Ong: Yes, definitely. Some of my collections are inspired by Thai culture and even religion. When you travel to Thailand, you receive a garland as a welcome gift. I designed a bejewelled piece that pays homage to this cultural practice, which shows the warmth and hospitality of the Thai people. Another piece was inspired by the lotus flower, the symbol of Buddhism, which is Thailand’s dominant religion.
