A Chinese jewellery store sold 100,000 pieces of gold jewellery worth US$31 million during the Chinese Lunar New Year Golden Week.
According to a xinhuanet.com report, Caishikou Department Store recorded a sales volume of RMB$200 million (US$31 million) during the seven-day Chinese New Year holidays, the last of which coincided with a global Valentine’s Day celebration.
Caishikou Department Store, popularly known as Caibai in mainland China, is the largest gold jewellery retailer in Beijing, the report said.
“Our .999 gold jewellery was actually sold at a lower price this year, but during these seven days our sales improved significantly compared with last year,” a salesperson of the store was quoted as saying.
Valentine’s Day sales gave the store a much-needed boost, with sales of diamond jewellery, mostly wedding rings, climbing 20 percent, the report added. “From the sixth day of the New Year onwards, the most sought after products were certainly wedding jewels,” a salesperson said.
