Mesa Lands Initial Open-Source Support For NVIDIA GeForce RTX 40 GPUs - Phoronix

With Mesa 25.2, NVK will now advertise support for Kepler (most GT and GTX 600 series, most GTX 700 series, and some GTX 800 series) and Blackwell (RTX 50xx series) GPUs. Vulkan 1.4 is supported by NVK on Blackwell, whereas Kepler is restricted to Vulkan 1.2 due to hardware limitations. NVIDIA’s proprietary driver has never supported the same set of desktop GPUs as NVK does now. In theory, we’ve also mostly enabled Hopper since it sits between Ada and Blackwell in NVIDIA’s GPU progression.

However, we have not been able to test it because the majority of NVK developers do not have access to any Hopper hardware, so there may be Hopper-specific issues. Linux users are unlikely to be affected by this because there are no consumer GPUs based on Hopper. Through Zink, Blackwell users will also receive support for OpenGL 4.6, just like users of earlier Turing GPUs (GTX 16xx and RTX20xx series) do today. Blackwell is not supported by the previous Nouveau GL driver. Kepler users will still get the old Nouveau GL driver by default for now. Pre-Turing GPUs may still be migrated to Zink in the future, but not in this release.
