A year after winning a best supporting actress Oscar for Girl, Interupted, Jolie took on the task of playing Lara Croft in the first of the Tomb Raider series – garnering legions of fans as she went. Now Vikander – who scooped best supporting actress at this year’s Academy Awards for her performance in The Danish Girl – is taking on the part of Croft, a beautiful, gun-toting archeologist.
The new film will be an origins-style prequel, contextualising Croft’s character development and sharing with the viewers her first adventure. Originally a video game released in 1996, Tomb Raider became a film franchise in 2001, and was followed with a sequel in 2003 – both starring Jolie. The game was relaunched in 2013 and is still available on Xbox.
