Americans are filling up their virtual shopping carts fast, a new study has found.
According to GlobalWebIndex’s bi-annual report on the latest trends in online commerce, 8 in 10 American internet users shop online.
Key 2016 Online Shopping Statistics
The study revealed some more interesting insights:
- About 92 percent of online adults visit an online retail store each month.
- Amazon is the clear online retail leader. Outside China, 55 percent of net users visit the site.
- PCs and laptops are the most popular devices for online shopping, although mobile continues to play an increasingly larger role in the ecommerce landscape.
- Shopping apps have experienced significant growth since late 2014 — 55 percent being used last month.
What This Means for Your Business
The message is clear: your business needs a strong online presence to draw more customers. Surprisingly, many businesses today are lacking this.
According to data from SurePayroll’s monthly Small Business Scorecard, only 26 percent of small businesses have an ecommerce site or even use their website to conduct sales. What’s more, 74 percent of small businesses don’t have an ecommerce-enabled website.
As the numbers suggest, having a solid online presence is imperative to gain and retain customers. That’s why businesses should create an ecommerce strategy to achieve best results.
London-based GlobalWebIndex interviewed more than 200,000 internet users across 34 markets for the study.
