Do you remember when you first started using makeup and skincare products? Perhaps you were left to fend for yourself and learn to navigate this daunting world alone. Finding the right products can be exciting but a bit intimidating due to all the choices.

Without help, your teen may find herself facing skin issues such as breakouts, or making makeup choices that are not age appropriate. A bit of gentle guidance can go a long way with your beginner teen. You can help your teen put the puzzle pieces together — and it can be fun in the process.

1. Daily skin care:

Each day, your teen should use a cleanser, moisturizer and sunscreen as part of her skincare routine. A good cleanser formulated to remove dirt and makeup at the end of the day without stripping the skin of its moisture barrier is the essential first step in any skincare regimen.

• Breakouts can be distressing for teens. If your teenager suffers from breakouts, opt for a mild cleanser that contains salicylic acid. This ingredient can help remove debris from the pores and keep the skin clear. You might also consider a spot treatment with a low concentration of bacteria-killing benzoyl peroxide. This ingredient can be drying, so remind her to use it sparingly.

• A moisturizer is also a must to keep skin healthy and avoid dryness. If your teenager suffers from oily skin, look for lightweight, oil-free formulas. Many moisturizers also contain sunscreen — another important part of skin care. Just be sure to look for one that contains a broad-spectrum sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB rays. Remind your teen that youthful skin can stay healthy with daily sun protection, and encourage her to use a moisturizer with broad-spectrum sunscreen each day.

For full-body and full-day protection, remember that all sunscreens need to be reapplied every two hours or more often if sweating, swimming or toweling dry.

2. Makeup:

When it comes to makeup, many teens may want to dive right in and go for a dramatic look. Reminding your teen of the age-old notion that “less is more” can be beneficial. It’s not uncommon for a makeup beginner to use a heavy hand when applying cosmetics. The right tools and tricks of the trade can help her create a fresh and polished look. Here are the basic elements for every beginner makeup kit.

• Application tools. Essential cosmetic tools include a makeup sponge, a basic eye shadow brush, a blush brush and an eyelash curler. Synthetic bristle brushes are available at many drugstores and are designed to apply a range of makeup formulations effortlessly. Cream and powder eye shadows alike can be applied with synthetic bristle brushes.

• Bases and blushes. BB creams and tinted moisturizers are great for beginners, providing a bit of sheer coverage with the added benefit of moisture and sun protection. Heavy makeup isn’t necessary for teens, and the added antioxidants in many BB creams can be beneficial. Choose a blush in a universally flattering peachy coral shade.

• Eye makeup. After curling the lashes, follow up with two coats of a smudge-resistant mascara. Drugstores usually carry an array of high-quality options. Your teen may want to start out by choosing a brand made for sensitive eyes.

• Lips. Lipsticks and colored glosses are one of the best ways to experiment with makeup. Allow your teen to choose a shade or two she loves. Remind her to aim for a subtle, natural look in the beginning.

With a little guidance and practice, your teen will be on her way to healthy and beautiful looking skin for years to come.
