The arts-and-crafts favourite got a grown-up makeover during the autumn/winter 2016 shows season, making sparkling appearances everywhere from Fausto Puglisi to Jenny Packham. High-shine metallics made their mark too, with flashes of gold and silver giving otherwise pared-back looks a glimmering edge. And why not? It’s party season, after all, so what better time to shine? Whether you take your cues from Burberry’s unabashedly sparkling eyes or Giambattista Valli’s subversive silver-lined brows, see how the trend played out on the catwalk here.

Giambattista Valli
“Every girl has a silver lining,” said make-up artist Val Garland of the look she created at Giambattista Valli, where flashes of silver glitter adorning models’ brows or eyelids offset fresh skin and swept-back hair.
Fausto Puglisi
The star product at Fausto Puglisi was MAC’s Glitter in 3D Silver, for a subtle but sparkly update on the classic liquid-liner eye.
Jenny Packham
Take party beauty inspiration from the Jenny Packham show this winter, with a smattering of iridescent glitter at the centre of the lids and across the cheekbones. A few coats of mascara completes the look.
Jil Sander
It’s not only make-up maximalists that can tap into the glitter trend this season – look to Jil Sander’s subtle smoke-lined eyes, sparked off by a flash of silver at the centre.
Burberry
Has there ever been a more chic way to try glitter than with Burberry’s Shimmer Dust, available in both black and gold hues? At the autumn/winter 2016 show it was applied at the outer corners of the eyes, for a rock’n’roll sensibility that felt just as grown-up as the clothes on the catwalk.

Gold doesn’t have to be gaudy – instead pair it with warm pink and peach tones as at Vionnet, where Tom Pecheux applied MAC’s Superslick Liquid Eye Liner in Pure Show to the inner corners of the eyes and around the lips for a gilded effect.
