The world’s leading gemmological laboratories will be holding special seminars during the September Hong Kong Jewellery & Gem Fair.
The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) will be bringing a number of industry experts to the fair for presentations scheduled for September 14 and 16.
On September 14, Nicholas Sturman, senior manager of Global Pearl Services at GIA, will give a presentation focusing on pearl identification from a modern laboratory’s perspective. The seminar, “Pearls and their Identification in the 21st Century,” will take place at the AsiaWorld-Expo (AWE), Room 201B, Level 2, from 11am to 12pm.
On September 16, GIA will host two sessions at the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre (HKCEC). The first session, “Recent Diamond Trends and Services at the GIA Laboratory,” will be led by John King, chief quality officer of the GIA Laboratory, and Kristen Kubilus, Lab Internal Communications coordinator of the GIA. The presentation will focus on how GIA’s laboratory is rising to the challenges facing the industry in the diamond market, with an update on its mission-driven research and grading and identification services.
The second session, “Gemological Study of Synthetic Melee Diamonds,” will be led by Dr. Wuyi Wang, director of Research and Development at GIA. In his presentation, Wang will give a report on the crystallographic, gemmological, spectroscopic and chemical properties of synthetic melee diamonds. Growth technology will also be discussed, the lab said.
On September 17, Dr. Daniel Nyfeler of the Gübelin Gem Lab will give a lecture on “Consistency Through Standards.”
“In this insightful seminar, Daniel Nyfeler reveals the efforts that professional gem labs undertake to work in a consistent manner over time and different geographic entities. He further highlights the reasons and criteria that form the basis of the strict quality standards the Gübelin Gem Lab applies, namely on treatment disclosure, geographic origins and the use of trade colours,” Gübelin Gem Lab said. Nyfeler’s presentation will be held in Room S228 (old wing) of the HKCEC from 9am to 10am.
From 10am to 11am, Helen Molesworth of the Gübelin Academy will give a presentation on “Great Discoveries.” At the seminar, Molesworth will illustrate the “Great Discoveries” revealed by the fascinating world of gemstones and gemmology over time and still today.
Leading international jewellery and gemstone organisations, and companies will also hold events on the fair’s sidelines including The Asia Fancy Color Diamond Association, Asian Gemmological Institute and Laboratory Ltd, Gemfields, Shanghai Kimberlite Diamond Co Ltd, The Gemmological Association of Hong Kong, The Gem & Jewelry Institute of Thailand (Public Organization) and the Tanzanite Foundation.
This year’s September Hong Kong Fair will be held at the AWE from September 13 to 17 and the HKCEC from September 15 to 19.
