Cartoon Network Enterprises, the merchandising wing at Turner International India has associated with budding designer, Pratyush who is exclusively designing an apparel range and accessories inspired by The Powerpuff Girls (Cartoon Network characters) for his NextGen segment at the Lakme Fashion Week. We caught up with the budding designer and asked him a few questions. Here’s what he had to say…

What gave you the idea to come up with Powerpuff girls as your campaign?

Powerpuff Girls (PPG) have always portrayed what the world desires; power, liberation and equality towards women. Women today are strong willed, confident and very independent. They walk shoulder to shoulder with men across all fields.

I strongly believe various Cartoon Network characters are timeless and connect with people across all age groups. Powerpuff Girls symbolise cuteness, innocence, power, confidence and independence which is what todays women are represent. I thought a clothing range on Powerpuff Girls would be a perfect blend of my love towards superheroes and the concept of women empowerment through – “Saving the World Before Bedtime”

It’s an ambitious project for me and I am more than delighted to associate with Cartoon Network for this.

Why only Powerpuff girls?

Powerpuff Girls define the women of today, who are strong, independent and powerful. Cartoon characters like the PPG will surely connect with women who know they are strong, ready to compete with the world and accomplish their goals. It is a privilege to be associated with a brand like Cartoon Network. It makes me feel even more confident about my designs and collections curated for the women of today.

Are you a cartoons fan? If yes, then other than Powerpuff girls, whose style statements do you think resonate today’s fashion grammar and why?

I am a hard-core Cartoon and superhero aficionado; I feel DC characters like Superman and Wonder Woman have a great sense of style matched with the right attitude. These characters are powerful, strong and have a very interesting and engaging position in the fashion industry, with people willing to experiment with looks and styles. I feel there is a lot of potential to take these characters to the niche market across India.

This can possibly be a game-changer for fashion, if it works out well. Nervous or excited?

I am humbled and honoured to be the first Indian designer to be associated with Cartoon Network and launch a range of apparels inspired by Powerpuff Girls. I am extremely excited and looking forward to showcasing my work to the world. People are going to feel nostalgic once they see the designs and garments.

I believe, this will surely open new horizons in the fashion industry, giving an opportunity and inspiration to other fashion labels and designers. By partnering with Cartoon Network, I feel very privileged to pioneer a collection where Cartoon Network characters are used on couture as well as ready to wear collections for women. I am certain of the buzz it will create and am eagerly looking forward to it.

Who from Bollywood would you rather pick to play the three Powerpuff girls and why? Who do you think will look the best in your designs?

I will pick up Kangana Ranaut as Buttercup. Buttercup’s personality is “spice”, very hard to convince and a tough fighter. This matches well with Kangana’s attitude and personality.

Priyanka Chopra can be Blossom, as she is about “everything nice”. Priyanka is very composed but can be choosy at times and always mothers Bubbles and Buttercup. Priyanka fits well with these characteristics of Blossoms.

Bubbles should be Jacqueline Fernandez as Bubbles is “the cute one” which goes with the personality of Jacqueline. Yellow hair will suit her as well (laughs)

Having chosen Bubbles, Buttercup and Blossom, I think the kind of attitude that my clothes have, Alia Bhatt and Disha Patani will be able to carry it off with a lot of oomph, style and attitude.
