With India Couture Week 2017 almost upon us, we don’t blame you for wanting to jump the gun. A sentiment clearly shared by designer Anita Dongre who began the festivities early by sneaking a few pieces from her Autumn/Winter ’17 line-up online.
Called the ‘Tree of Love’, the collection is her love letter to the Bishnoi tribe from Thar, Rajasthan that charted history by forming a human fort around a grove of khejri trees to prevent them from being uprooted by the then-Maharajah, Abhay Singh of Jodhpur. Inspired by their sacrifice, the designer has pledged to plant a tree each time a piece from the collection is sold.
Likewise, the khejri plays a starring role in her Couture Week ’17 presentation as the key motif on the lehengas. The Anita Dongre bride this season comes in monochrome lehengas and gowns; the crème gold that you loved in her Alchemy collection from earlier this year returns in the form of delicate champagne-coloured capes. Anita’s flair for drama is encapsulated by a generous helping of tulle and organza underneath to provide fuller, luxurious silhouettes. Top it off with a tiered polki necklace set and matha patti, and you’re ready for your moment in the spotlight.
