Choudry loves fashion and dressing well.

Sophie Choudry first captured our collective pop culture consciousness in the early 2000s, as a VJ with MTV India. Since then, she’s cut albums and acted in movies. Choudry is one of those who can carry off an Indian ensemble flawlessly and also rock a chic shift dress. Here are her style secrets.

What are some staples that we’ll always find in your wardrobe?

Loads and loads of jeans. You’ll also find white tops, several black and red dresses, and tonnes of shoes – especially good nude ones.

Were you always interested in fashion?

Yes, as far back as I can remember. Even as a little kid, I used to pick and style my own outfits.

Are you an impulsive shopper?

Not really. I do splurge but I usually only buy stuff I really want, and if I can’t decide, I leave it. If I’m thinking about it when I wake up the next day, I go and buy it. I have pretty expensive taste so it doesn’t make sense to buy something unless I’m sure.

Choudry styles her own outfits as she’s sure of what works for her.

Are there things in your wardrobe you’re attached to?

I still have a Gucci bag and shoes I bought with my first paycheck when I was in college. I also have a pair of Prada boots I have worn only once but can’t bring myself to ever give away. I’m a hoarder when it comes to shoes and maybe even bags, but with clothes I do a pretty regular clean out and donate to charity. Even then, I have cupboards full in each room of my house. I can’t be as ruthless as I should be!

What’s the one style trend you’ll never give in to?

Probably dungarees. It’s just not my thing. But then again, when it comes to fashion, never say never.

Do you have a stylist or do you put together your looks yourself?

Ninety nine per cent of the time, I style myself. There are a few stylists who are doing great work right now, but I’m pretty sure of my own sensibilities, and what works for me. Also, I have a great one-on-one relationship with many designers, so that makes it easier.

Have you ever made any fashion faux pas?

Yes, I’m sure I have. Sometimes, things look great in a mirror but not in a camera flash. Fortunately, those moments are few and far between!

What’s the most common mistake people make while dressing up?

They wear something they have been told to wear because it’s on trend. They aren’t comfortable or confident in it but they still wear it and it looks terrible. You first have to understand your body and your personal style before you allow someone to dress you in whatever they think works.

Who’s your fashion inspiration?

I love the classic icons like Audrey Hepburn, Sophia Loren, and Katherine Hepburn. I also love Jennifer Lopez and Blake Lively’s style.

Who are your favourite designers/brands?

I’m in love with Gucci’s bags, shoes and clothes this season. I love outfits by Stella McCartney too and Balmain is a favourite because it’s so cool and edgy. As for shoes, it’s Louboutin, Gianvito Rossi, Jimmy Choo, Aquazzura; and for casual footwear, Tods. When it comes to bags, it’s Chanel and Gucci. And among Indian designers, I love Manish Malhotra and Gauri and Nainika.

Do you ever see yourself turning designer?

You never know. I love fashion and dressing well, so it would be a natural profession. Let’s wait and watch.
