When it comes to your wedding day, you’ll want to smell as amazing as you’ll surely look. That’s why finding the right perfume is just as important as picking out your dream wedding dress. Before you start spritzing, you’ll need to know when to shop, how to test out various perfumes, and what will determine the best scent for your body. You—and everyone who catches a whiff—can thank us later.

1. Consider Your Venue

Like your wedding location and overall décor, the right fragrance can heighten the overall ambiance of your ceremony. How does your venue play into your final decision? Rose and other floral-inspired scents with sweet top notes will play nicely during a garden ceremony, while at a vineyard, succulent fruity scents like fig and blackberry with warm notes of cedar wood and musk are ideal. Preparing for a beach wedding? Opt for fresh and clean scents. If you’re a city gal, go for white florals and green leaves for a simple elegance.

2. Forgo Your Signature Scent

On a day as special as your wedding day, you might want to put down your day-to-day fragrance. Of course, you don’t want to pick a fragrance that’s drastically different from what you’re used to. Even though you want something new, it should still smell like, well, you. If matching your wedding-day fragrance to your venue just isn’t your thing, pick a scent that reminds you of your favorite memory with your significant other. Maybe it was your first date, or the moment your S.O. got down on one knee and popped the question — the choice is yours.

3. Find a Perfume With a Higher Oil Than Water Content

Fragrances with a higher content of oil typically last longer and are easily activated by increased movement, which is perfect once you hit the dance floor. While you’re searching for the perfect scent, opt for a fragrance oil or Eau de Parfum, as these have a higher oil content than an Eau de Toilette.

4. Skip the Blotting Strips

You won’t know how a scent smells on your skin unless is spritzed, well, on your skin. Aim the atomizer at pulse points like your wrist, neck, and décolletage. Limit yourself to two scents per shopping trip in order to avoid olfactory burnout.

5. Take Your Time

There should be no rush in finding the perfect fragrance for your walk down the aisle. As you try outdifferent scents, sit with one for a bit. Most perfumes take at least half an hour to dry, and until it does, you won’t be able to smell the top, middle, and base notes. While you’re at the counter, ask if you can take away one or two samples so you can observe the changes over time.

6. Placement Is Key

Never spray a fragrance in the air and walk into it, you’re just wasting precious ingredients. Avoid spritzing the back of your neck, as the heat from your hair will cause perspiration and distort the scent. Focus on spraying your perfume from the bottom up. At the ankles, behind the knees, in-between the thighs, in the crook of the elbow and at the pulse points — at the wrists, at the cleavage and at the nape of the neck.

7. Try a Custom Blend

Tried every scent under the sun and still stumped? Then why not create your own?! The Fragrance Shop, which is located in NYC, stocks well over 300 different oils, ranging from spicy to sweet scents, for guests to create a personalized fragrance that’s distinctly their own. The end result can cost anywhere between $28 to $69, depending on the oils chosen.
